TromBone

Housed in beautiful new facilities at the Natalie L. Haslam Music Center, the UT Trombone Studio is a hotspot for the modern and versatile student who is looking to launch a successful career in music as an educator and trombonist. Under the tutelage of Alex van Duuren, D.M.A. University of Tennessee trombone students are national competition and audition winners. Studio members have an outlet to learn and perform in a variety of ways: on center-stage as soloists, through the storied UT Trombone Choir, and as members of one of the College of Music’s premier performance ensembles, including the Pride of Southland Marching Band.

Recent Trombone Studio Accomplishments:

  • Cole Bartels, D.M.A. (M.M. 2019) – Won position as Assistant Professor of Trombone at the University of Central Michigan.
  • James Perez (M.M. 2021) – Won position as 2nd Trombone in the Owensboro Symphony.
  • Hugh Lindsay (M.M. 2023) – Won position with the Glenn Miller Orchestra, as well as Adjunct Instructor of Low Brass at Pellissippi Community College.
  • Andrew Crowell (B.M. 2020) – Won position with the United States Marine Corps Bands.
  • Jarod Schafer (B.M. 2023) – Awarded full tuition scholarship to attend the University of Michigan.
  • Reilly Fox (M.M. 2019) – Won position as Lecturer of Athletic Bands at East Tennessee State University.

Prospective Students

All recruits to the University of Tennessee are invited to receive a free lesson with Alex van Duuren, D.M.A. and are welcome to spend a day with the trombone studio in rehearsals and classes! We want you to come see what it is like to be a music major by doing it yourself for a day!

Please email Alex van Duuren, D.M.A. at [email protected] to set up your time with the trombone studio.The Music Department also has a First Year Coordinator who can answer questions about the school, the audition process and many other issues that pertain to first year studies.  Please do not hesitate to contact our Director of Admissions and Student Success, Sara Carroll, D.M.E., with any questions that may arise.

UT Trombone Choir

Under the baton, or pencil, of Alex van Duuren, D.M.A., the UTK Trombone Choir travels the country representing the School of Music as a premier performance ensemble of the Natalie L. Haslam Music Center. Our ensemble is celebrating our 50th anniversary in 2015, and is a storied and historical ensemble of the UT College of Music. Members enjoy performing contemporary works and classic arrangements for trombone choir, performing at local schools and professional engagements, as well as traveling for national competitions.
