Associate or Full Professor of Instrumental Music Education
Description
The University of Tennessee’s Natalie L. Haslam College of Music is seeking a dynamic and experienced candidate to provide leadership and vision for the Music Education area. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a collaborative spirit and exhibit strategic innovation in the realm of music education. The candidate should also: 1) work collaboratively with other College of Music faculty to sustain and support the quality and enrollment of both undergraduate and graduate programs; 2) maintain a record of regional, national, and international research/creative/scholarly activity while participating in service appropriate for a university faculty member; 3) maintain close collaboration with the College of Education, current music educators, and the Tennessee Department of Education to stay updated on teacher certification requirements; 4) bring proven experiences that will maintain and increase the excellence and visibility of our programs; and 5) demonstrate a commitment to forward-thinking curriculum development, innovation, and community engagement.
Associate or Full Professor; nine-month tenure-track appointment beginning August 1, 2025. Salary and fringe benefits are competitive and commensurate with rank and experience.
Qualifications
Required:
- Doctorate/Ph.D. in the area of Music Education required by time of appointment
- Proven success in teaching music education in the public school setting and leading significant college/university-level music education programs
- A consistent, well-rounded record of quantitative and qualitative research, presentations, and scholarly/creative activity
- Demonstrated abilities in organization, communication, and working effectively with faculty, students, colleagues, and administration
- Commitment to preparing versatile and innovative music educators for careers in the twenty-first century
Preferred:
- Experience in leading graduate-level research methods including navigation of IRB and EdTPA process
- Evidence of successful communication and professional relationships with music educators at the elementary, middle school, and high school levels
- Experience with online learning opportunities in Music Education
- Communication abilities and cross-cultural competencies to maximize their effectiveness with diverse groups of students, colleagues, and community members
Teaching Assistant Professor or Lecturer of Music Education: Strings & Digital Learning
Description
The Natalie L. Haslam College of Music at the University of Tennessee is seeking a Teaching Assistant Professor or Lecturer of Music Education: Strings and Digital Learning. The ideal candidate will have completed or be enrolled in a Music Education or Education Doctoral program.
This candidate will teach in-person string methods courses, string education, and pedagogy classes, and oversee the UTK String Project. Faculty member will also develop and teach graduate-level online courses for an anticipated hybrid or fully online Master’s in Music Education degree at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. Additional duties may include string chamber music coaching and/or possibly applied string teaching.
Qualifications
Required:
MMEd degree. Doctorate or ABD status in a Music Education program. Undergraduate degree in Music Education or Performance with violin, viola, cello or bass as the primary instrument.
Preferred:
Completed PhD in Music Education. Some professional string playing and/or teaching. Experience in digital learning/pedagogy.
Assistant Professor of Choral Music Education & Associate Director of Choral Activities
Description
Tenure-track: nine-month, full-time appointment beginning Fall Semester, August 1, 2025. Salary and fringe benefits are competitive and commensurate with rank and experience.
This position is a critical blend between choral conducting and choral music education. This faculty member will conduct choral ensembles, teach courses in choral music methods, literature and conducting, coordinate and supervise course-related field experiences, and supervise student teachers. The successful candidate will maintain an active schedule of recruitment and guest conducting, provide workshops and actively participate in professional choral and music education organizations, develop regional and national visibility as an ensemble director and educator, and develop and maintain positive relationships with secondary school choral directors.
Qualifications
Required:
Doctorate or ABD. At least three years of successful public school experience and a commitment to teacher training. Ability to teach courses in choral music education. Demonstrated abilities in organization, and communicating and working effectively with faculty, students, and colleagues in the field. Commitment to preparing high-quality versatile and innovative music educators for careers in the twenty-first century within a vibrant, collaborative, and collegial teaching and learning environment.
Preferred:
Successful collegiate experience. Evidence of successful communication and professional relationships with music educators at the high school level.
