Access & Engagement Statement
At the University of Tennessee Natalie L. Haslam College of Music, we firmly believe academic and artistic excellence thrive within a welcoming, equitable, and inclusive community for all.
We value the identities and perspectives of all in our community and honor these in every aspect of our College. As part of the university’s commitment to “create a campus where everyone matters and belongs,” we aim to foster an environment that encourages respectful and civil open dialogue among individuals with diverse aesthetics, ideas, and identities.
We acknowledge and celebrate the rich diversity of music, which manifests in a multiplicity of forms across cultures worldwide. We commit to engage with repertoire from multiple traditions, including music from historically underrepresented groups. As part of the state’s flagship institution, we are committed to creating access to artistic experiences for communities across Tennessee and beyond.
We embrace the fact music can empower individuals and communities to express their distinct voices and raise awareness of social injustices. We acknowledge oppressive practices have and continue to negatively affect marginalized communities, and many of these communities have been historically excluded in music studies. We, therefore, commit to ensuring access, a sense of belonging, a culture of respect, and an inclusive Natalie L. Haslam College of Music community.
