Certificate in Vocal Pedagogy

The Certificate Program in Vocal Pedagogy is an add-on certificate available to graduate students already in a Masters of Music program at the University of Tennessee or as a stand-alone certificate for vocalists looking to further their pedagogical knowledge and skills. This program will provide graduate students with the coursework and practical experience necessary to build a career as a voice teacher. Home unit: Natalie L. Haslam College of Music.

Requirements

  1. All semester credit hours for the certificate must be from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
  2. At least three (3) credit hours for the certificate must be earned outside of the requirements of the degree(s) and other certificates.
  3. Since graduate certificates are university credentials, current students must apply through Graduate Admissions to the graduate certificate program. Those seeking a stand-alone certificate must apply to both Graduate Admissions and the College of Music.
  4. Current students must be admitted to the certificate program prior to completing 6 credit hours toward the certificate. For this reason, this certificate should be added on to your program as early as possible during your study at UT.
  5. Students must maintain a minimum 3.0 grade point average once in the program and complete the requirements of the certificate program as stated in the Graduate Catalog to be awarded the graduate certificate.

Admission Steps

  1. Contact Dr. Kimberly Roberts to confirm you are applying to the program.
  2. For new student applications: apply to the Certificate Program; ensure you select “Graduate Certificate in Music Theory Pedagogy.” For current students already in a master’s program: you must submit an online change of program. To do this, please click here.  Begin a new application and indicate you are a currently enrolled graduate student to enable the application to be processed as a change of program. Then choose the term and the add-on certificate option. There are no recommendation letters required, and no fee is charged to add-on a certificate.
  3. You will receive an email from the Graduate School confirming your application was received. Remember to be admitted into this program, you must meet the university entrance requirements for a certificate program (see Graduate catalog: Graduate Certificate Programs) and interview with Dr. Roberts.  The department will review your application, and you will receive a final notice of approved/denied admission.
