Certificate in Music Theory Pedagogy
This certificate is available to graduate students already in a Masters of Music program at the University of Tennessee or who already hold a Masters degree in Music. The program consists of 15 hours of coursework in analysis, music technology, music theory pedagogy, as well as a final teaching project. This program provides students with the knowledge and practical experience needed to teach high school or undergraduate music theory courses.
Requirements
- All semester credit hours for the certificate must be from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
- At least 3 credit hours for the certificate must be earned outside of the requirements of the degree(s) and other certificates.
- Since graduate certificates are university credentials, a student must apply through Graduate Admissions to the graduate certificate program.
- Students must be admitted to the certificate program prior to completing 6 credit hours toward the certificate. For this reason, this certificate should be added on to your program as early as possible during your study at UT.
- Students must maintain a minimum 3.0 grade point average once in the program and complete the requirements of the certificate program as stated in the Graduate Catalog to be awarded the graduate certificate.

- For new student applications: apply to the Certificate Program; ensure you select “Graduate Certificate in Music Theory Pedagogy.”
For current students already in a master’s program: you must submit an online change of program. To do this, please click here. Begin a new application and indicate that you are a currently enrolled graduate student to enable the application to be processed as a change of program. Then choose the term and the add-on certificate option. There are no recommendation letters required and there is no fee charged to add-on a certificate. - You will receive an email from the Graduate School confirming your application was received. Remember that to be admitted into this program, you must meet the university entrance requirements for a certificate program (see Graduate catalog: Graduate Certificate Programs), interview with the theory faculty and have passed the Graduate Theory Diagnostic test or Music Theory 400: Graduate Theory Review. The department will review your application and you will receive a final notice of approved/denied admission.
