Sing With Us!
Any student who enjoys singing can find their choral home in a University of Tennessee choir through a brief appointment called a choral hearing, designed to place singers into choral ensembles best suited to their voice type, skill level, and literacy level. UTK Choirs are open to all students on campus, and involve music majors and non-music majors alike! Singers of all experience levels are welcome.
To sign up for a choral hearing for one of our traditional choral ensembles (Chamber Singers, Concert Choir, Men’s Chorale, and Women’s Chorale), please click here: Choral Hearings Sign-Up.

FAQ:
What can I expect during a choral hearing? Choral hearings are brief, low-stress voice placement sessions which take place one-on-one with a choral faculty member, and are a way for us to get to know you, your goals, and your voice. In the hearing, you will be asked to vocalize in order to determine which choral section (soprano, alto, tenor, or bass) best suits your natural range and tessitura. Then, you will be asked to demonstrate your level of musicianship through sight-reading. If you are new to reading music, don’t worry! We will walk you through the entire process. Just come ready to sing!
Can I be involved in multiple choirs? Yes! Be sure they work for your schedule. Have questions? Reach out to your intended ensemble director(s)!
I am new to choral singing. Which choir would be best for me? Most of our beginner singers find success in Women’s or Men’s Chorale as their first choral experience. We’ll assist you in making this decision during your choral hearing!
I am an experienced and enthusiastic choral singer. Which choir will be best for me? Wonderful! Many of our advanced singers find themselves best suited for Chamber Singers or Concert Choir, depending on openings in the groups in any given year or semester. We’ll evaluate your best fit during your choral hearing!
I completed (or will complete) a hearing during summer orientation. Do I need to sign up here for another choral hearing? Nope! You’re all set.
I have a different question. We are here to help! Reach out to Dr. Batey (abatey@utk.edu) or Dr. Spillane (lspillan@utk.edu).
