Master of Music in Musicology

This concentration is designed for students who wish to pursue advanced studies in historical musicology and ethnomusicology. Graduates of this program would be qualified to pursue careers as teachers and researchers of musicology-related subjects at the college level and to pursue doctoral study in historical musicology or ethnomusicology.

Entrance Requirements

  1. An interview with members of the musicology  faculty is required prior to admission. Applicants must also submit a paper demonstrating their capability to undertake graduate study and to engage in research in music.
  2. Applicants should have completed a bachelor’s degree in music from an accredited institution with course work equivalent to that in bachelor’s degrees conferred by the University of Tennessee.
  3. Diagnostic examinations in music theory and musicology  must be taken by all entering students before registering for courses. If deficiencies are determined, specific courses may be recommended or required.
  4. Applicants must submit scores from the Graduate Record Examination (GRE), general. Copies of GRE scores must  be sent to the office of Graduate Admissions and Records. Please note in order for your GRE exam results to reach us by the deadline, you must take the exam no later than the December test date.

* At least one credit of music electives must be in non-musicology courses

Candidates must pass a foreign language reading proficiency examination before being admitted to candidacy. Any language other than English is acceptable. A maximum of 2 ensemble hours may be counted as Music Electives.

Graduate students in the Musicology concentration are limited to a total of two failed attempts at graduate-level musicology courses, including those attempts that end in withdrawal from a course.

Final Requirements

  1. Comprehensive written and oral examinations.
  2. Thesis.
  3. Thesis defense.
