Master of Music in Performance – Voice
This program is designed for accomplished vocalists who intend to pursue careers as performers or teachers. Graduates of this program are qualified to pursue doctoral work in voice.
Entrance Requirements
- An audition is required prior to admission. Applicants should upload a pre-screening recording to the online College of Music application, 3 songs (a combination of arias and art songs) in 3 different languages (Italian, French, German, or English). Approved applicants will be invited for an on-campus interview and audition. A list of the applicant’s complete repertoire should be uploaded at the time of application.
- Applicants should have completed a bachelor’s degree in music from an accredited institution with voice as the principal instrument and course work equivalent to that in bachelor’s degrees conferred by the University of Tennessee.
- Diagnostic examinations in music theory and musicology must be taken by all entering students before registering for courses. If deficiencies are determined, specific courses may be recommended or required.

*A maximum of 2 hours in Ensemble may be counted as a Music Elective. Music Elective must include a chamber recital or a major operatic role.
Students are required to enroll in lessons concurrently with Mus Gen 501 Graduate Recital.
All students are required to enroll in Music Ensemble 540 each semester of enrollment in the graduate program in voice. A maximum of 2 hours will be applied toward completion of the degree.
Final Requirements
- Graduate Recital.
- Comprehensive written and oral examinations.
