Through a curriculum that emphasizes versatility, creativity, and professional development, students receive the tools they need to thrive in today’s musical landscape.

Academics

No matter the academic program, studio members perform regularly in large ensembles – including the Wind Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, Jazz Ensembles, Symphonic Band, Concert Band, and the Pride of the Southland Marching Band – as well as in the UT Trombone Choir and various chamber ensembles.

Undergraduate Programs

Students in the Trombone Studio may pursue a Bachelor of Music in Music Education, Music Performance, or Theory & Composition.


The Natalie L. Haslam College of Music also offers Bachelor of Arts in Music concentrations, and BA students have the option to take applied lessons as part of a studio experience.

Graduate Programs

Graduate students may pursue a Master of Music in Music Education or Music Performance with trombone as their primary area of study.

Graduate Artist Certificate

Designed for highly accomplished performers seeking to refine their artistry, the Graduate Artist Certificate offers advanced study as a stand-alone program.

Meet Professor van Duuren

Alex van Duuren, D.M.A. is a dynamic and versatile trombonist currently serving as Associate Professor of Trombone. He is a member of the Quintasonic Brass Quintet with colleagues Vince DiMartino, Jason Dovel, Matthew Haislip, and Alexander Lapins. Alex has performed with a variety of professional ensembles including the Knoxville Symphony and Knoxville Jazz Orchestra, the Nashville Recording Orchestra, Greenville Symphony, Brevard Philharmonic, Tucson Symphony, Symphony Augusta, and the Orquesta Filarmónica de Sonora. 

Student Achievements & Studio Highlights

  • Cole Bartels, D.M.A. (M.M. 2019) – Appointed Assistant Professor of Trombone, Central Michigan University
  • James Perez (M.M. 2021) – Won position as 2nd Trombone, Owensboro Symphony
  • Hugh Lindsay (M.M. 2023) – Joined the Glenn Miller Orchestra and became Adjunct Instructor of Low Brass, Pellissippi State Community College
  • Andrew Crowell (B.M. 2020) – Accepted a position with the United States Marine Corps Bands
  • Jarod Schafer (B.M. 2023) – Awarded a full tuition scholarship to attend the University of Michigan
  • Reilly Fox (M.M. 2019) – Appointed Lecturer of Athletic Bands, East Tennessee State University

Performance Opportunities

UT Trombone Choir: A storied ensemble celebrating over 50 years of excellence. Under the direction of Professor van Duuren, the ensemble performs locally, competes nationally, and champions both contemporary and classic repertoire.

College Ensembles: Trombone students perform with the Wind Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, Jazz Ensembles, Chamber Groups, and the Pride of the Southland Marching Band

Community Engagement: Students perform in public schools, professional events, and university functions throughout the year

Graduate Teaching Assistantships

The Natalie L. Haslam College of Music offers a number of graduate teaching assistantships each academic year. 

Assistantships carry a waiver of the university tuition, pays for mandatory university fees, medical coverage, and carries a monthly stipend.
