The Music Education program prepares prospective music educators for teaching elementary general music, instrumental, and vocal music in grades K-12. The Program is based on the National Core Music Standards and the requirements for licensure established by the Tennessee Department of Education.
UTK has two pathways for earning Tennessee K-12 music teacher licensure: the Traditional Program and the 5th-Year Program. The Traditional Program requires seven semesters of coursework, culminating in an eighth semester of student teaching in public schools. After completing coursework and student teaching, students graduate with a Bachelor of Music in Music Education. The 5th year Program requires an eight-semester curriculum and, after graduating with the B.M. in Music Education, a full-year, graduate-level internship in the public schools, which in Tennessee counts as one year of teaching experience and twenty-four hours of graduate work; students return for a sixth year of study, after which they graduate with a Master of Music in Music Education.
