Academics

Whether your goal is a professional career, teaching, or advanced academic study, the UT Cello Studio provides the foundation and mentorship to help you succeed.

Undergraduate Programs

Students in the Cello Studio may pursue either a Bachelor of Music (BM) or a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Music, depending on their career goals and interests.

  • The Bachelor of Music (BM) is a professional degree designed for students seeking advanced training in music performance, education, jazz, composition, or theory. Applied lessons are a central part of the degree for most concentrations (such as performance, education, and jazz) and may be optional in others (such as composition and theory).
  • The Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Music is a flexible, interdisciplinary degree that allows students to study music in context with other fields such as media, business, communications, and culture. Applied lesson requirements are dependent on the chosen track.

Students should review the degree requirements carefully to see how applied lessons fit into their intended program of study.

Graduate Programs

Graduate students may pursue a Master of Music in Music Education or Music Performance with cello as their primary area of study.

Graduate Artist Certificate

Designed for highly accomplished performers seeking to refine their artistry, the Graduate Artist Certificate offers advanced study as a stand-alone program.

Meet Professor Wesley Baldwin

Cellist Wesley Baldwin holds degrees from Yale College, the New England Conservatory, and the University of Maryland. He performs throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia as a soloist and chamber musician. As a soloist with orchestra he has recently appeared with the Laredo Philharmonic, the Oregon Mozart Players, the Symphony of the Mountains, and the Aberdeen, Bemidji, Bryan, Chattanooga, Florence, Germantown, Johnson City, Hot Springs, Knoxville, La Porte, Oak Ridge, Manchester, New River Valley, Salisbury, Wintergreen, and Bismarck-Mandan Symphony Orchestras, among others. His passionate and charismatic performances have been widely lauded.

Performance Opportunities

Cello students at UT have access to a wide range of ensemble experiences. They regularly perform with the Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, and a variety of chamber music groups. Students also participate in studio recitals throughout the year and are encouraged to engage with special events like the Contemporary Music Festival, UT Opera Theatre productions, and guest artist collaborations.

These opportunities help students grow as versatile performers while developing a strong sense of community and professional artistry

Tennessee Cello Workshop

Held annually, the Tennessee Cello Workshop (TCW) is a three-day exploration and celebration of cello playing and music making. The Tennessee Cello Workshop encourages cellists of any age and proficiency level to participate. The unifying characteristic of all registrants is a great love for the instrument.
