Meet Professor Victor Chávez
Professor Victor Chávez, Jr. is a Mexican-American, fifth-generation musician from El Paso, Texas. He is currently Associate Professor of Clarinet at the University of Tennessee Knoxville and holds tenured orchestral positions as third/bass clarinetist with the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra, principal clarinetist of the Johnson City Symphony Orchestra in Johnson City, TN; the Symphony of the Mountains in Kingsport, TN; and the Tri-Cities Opera Company in Binghamton, NY.

Performance Opportunities
Clarinetists at the University of Tennessee have access to a wide range of dynamic performance experiences that support artistic growth, build confidence, and foster community. From solo recitals and chamber ensembles to large ensemble settings and outreach concerts, our students are encouraged to take the stage often and meaningfully.
A centerpiece of the clarinet studio’s performance offerings is the UTKlarinettenchor, a vibrant clarinet choir founded in 2013. Open to both majors and non-majors, this semi-chamber ensemble provides a well-rounded pedagogical and performance experience. Students explore auxiliary instruments, develop leadership skills, and perform in exciting venues on and off campus. Notable appearances include performances at the Tennessee Music Educators Association conference and the International Clarinet Association’s 2019 ClarinetFest.
