Welcome to the UT Piano Studio!
Piano students at the University of Tennessee study in a supportive, artistically focused environment that prepares them for meaningful careers as performers, teachers, scholars, and more. With individualized instruction and a rigorous, comprehensive curriculum, students develop the technique, artistry, and professional experience needed for success.

Academics
In the UT Piano Studio, students receive instruction in piano literature, pedagogy, keyboard harmony, accompanying, chamber music, and collaborative performance. As an All-Steinway School, UT offers piano students access to exceptional instruments and practice spaces, including grand pianos in every practice room and both Hamburg and New York Steinway concert grands for performances.
Undergraduate Programs
Students in the Piano Studio may pursue a Bachelor of Music in Music Education, Music Performance, or Theory & Composition.
The Natalie L. Haslam College of Music also offers Bachelor of Arts in Music concentrations, and BA students have the option to take applied lessons as part of a studio experience.
Graduate Programs
Graduate students may pursue a Master of Music in Music Education or Music Performance with piano as their primary area of study.
Graduate Artist Certificate
Designed for highly accomplished performers seeking to refine their artistry, the Graduate Artist Certificate offers advanced study as a stand-alone program.

Meet Professor Chih-Long Hu
An active performer, Hu performs extensively in Asia, Europe, and America appearing as a concerto soloist, recitalist, and chamber musician. His recent performance highlights include concerto performances of Rachmaninov’s Paganini Rhapsody, Mozart Concerto No.9, Schumann’s Concerto in A, Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, solo and chamber recitals in China, Taiwan, Korea, Indonesia, Ireland, Canada, and throughout the U.S. Hu’s performances have been broadcast in “Performance Today” through NPR stations across the U.S. as well as in Taiwan, China and Japan.

Meet Professor Eunsuk Jung
Eunsuk Jung is a pianist, collaborative artist, and pedagogue. She made her orchestral debut in 1992 with the Seoul Symphony Orchestra in Korea. Since then, she has been performed solo recitals, concerti and chamber concerts throughout Asia and the United States. Her most recent solo performance was at Carnegie Hall in NYC.

- Student research has been presented at national conferences including MTNA and the College Music Society

- Hosts the annual Knoxville International Piano Festival & Competition, bringing world-renowned pianists and emerging talent to campus each March

Performance Opportunities

- Opportunities to compete in the annual Concerto Competition, with winners performing alongside the UT Symphony Orchestra
- Participation in masterclasses and public performances during the Knoxville International Piano Festival

Piano Lessons for Non-Majors
UT students outside the Natalie L. Haslam College of Music may register for piano lessons as credit-bearing electives. Placement is based on prior experience and ability:
- MUSC 101 – Fundamentals of Performance
- MUPF 180 – Piano
- MUSC 540 – Secondary Applied Music
Students can enroll for 1 credit (30-minute weekly lessons) or 2 credits (60-minute lessons) and will be assigned a Graduate Teaching Assistant for weekly instruction.

Graduate Teaching Assistantships
The Natalie L. Haslam College of Music offers a number of graduate teaching assistantships each academic year.
Assistantships carry a waiver of the university tuition, pays for mandatory university fees, medical coverage, and carries a monthly stipend.
