Three asynchronous online courses from the University of Tennessee Natalie L. Haslam College of Music have been selected by UT Digital Learning as featured examples of innovative online instruction at the University of Tennessee.
Designed and taught by Denin Slage-Koch, Teaching Assistant Professor of Jazz Guitar, Foundations of Guitar I, II, and III offer a fully asynchronous and comprehensive learning pathway that guides students from introductory fundamentals to advanced guitar technique and musicianship.
“It’s a comprehensive course that helps people move asynchronously online from ‘I’ve never held a guitar before’ to ‘I’m working on developing my own sound,’” said Slage-Koch.
The courses demonstrate how music education can thrive in an online modality through intentional course design, engaging multimedia instruction, and flexible learning opportunities that expand access while maintaining academic rigor and artistic growth.
The Foundations of Guitar course sequence will be offered again during Summer 2026.
