Undergraduate Admission & Auditions

1. Apply to the University of Tennessee

  • November 1: Application deadline to be considered for competitive scholarships (Chancellor's Honors Program etc.)
  • December 15: Final application deadline for Undergraduate freshman students
  • April 1: Application deadline for Undergraduate international students
  • June 1: Application deadline for Undergraduate transfer students

2. Apply to the School of Music

The School of Music has an additional application. You must apply to the School of Music in order to schedule an audition. Apply to the UT School of Music at getacceptd.com as soon as possible or by February 1, 2020. You do NOT need to wait to be accepted to the University in order to apply to the School of Music. A fee of $15 will be assessed for applications. An additional $10 fee will be assessed for students wishing to include a video or audio recording with their application.

Video or audio recordings are ONLY required for undergraduate applicants who are applying for the Bachelor of Music – Composition track.

The University Application Deadline is Dec. 15. You MUST apply to the University AND the School of Music to be considered for admission into music degrees.

Does your area of study have special audition requirements?

Applied Music:

    You must apply to the School of Music at getacceptd.com and audition on your primary instrument.

Music & Culture:

    You must apply to the School of Music at getacceptd.com. If you have questions about the program, you may schedule an interview through Acceptd, but an interview with the faculty is not required for admission into the minor. You do not need to audition on an instrument. However, if you wish to take applied lessons anytime during your study, you will need to audition for the appropriate applied faculty and be accepted to their studio before you can register for lessons.

Music Theory:

    You do not need to apply to the School of Music or audition on an instrument. However, if you wish to take applied lessons anytime during your study you will need to audition for the appropriate applied faculty and be accepted to their studio before you can register for lessons. 

Music Composition:

    Students interested in minor in composition must complete at least one full semester of coursework at UTK before adding the minor. You must complete an interview/audition with the composition faculty before being allowed to add the minor. The theory/composition area highly recommends at least one semester of music theory and ear training before beginning the minor. Students should contact Dr. Brendan McConville (bmcconvi@utk.edu) to set up an interview for February auditions. You should bring a portfolio of their works, either printed or electronic.

Music Business:

    You do not need to apply to the School of Music or audition on an instrument. However, if you wish to take applied lessons anytime during your study you will need to audition for the appropriate applied faculty and be accepted to their studio before you can register for lessons.
  • Audition on your primary instrument
  • Interview with a member of the music education faculty. This interview will determine whether you're accepted into music education classes. Note: After completing two years of coursework, you will need to apply for admission to Teacher Education. Further details can be found under Music Education.
  • Composition applicants: Submit two or more compositions with recordings (midi files acceptable) representative of the your work when you apply at getacceptd.com
  • Audition on your primary instrument
  • Interview with music theory/composition faculty
  • Interview with Musicology faculty on audition day.

3. Audition for the School of Music

To be admitted to the School of Music as a music major or minor, you must audition for entry to the School of Music.
Auditions for entry in Fall 2020:

  • February 8, 2020: Undergraduate
  • February 15, 2020: Undergraduate
  • February 22, 2020: Undergraduate

Auditions for the Pride of the Southland Marching Band - Non-music majors ONLY

  • February 29, 2020: Non-music majors
  • March 7, 2020: Non-music majors

Note: Students who are not majoring or minoring in music do NOT need to apply to the School of Music. Pride of the Southland auditions can be scheduled at utbands.com.

4. Audition and Scholarship Results

Audition results and scholarship offers will be sent by US mail on April 1.

5. Take a Theory Placement Exam

Before entering the School of Music, you will take a music theory placement exam. This online exam will be taken before summer orientation, prior to registering for classes, and will only cover written theory concepts.
