The UT World Percussion Ensemble seeks to engage various cultures based around drumming practices. We proactively seek to confront the roots of Colonialism in Western music, rejecting the idea that our own musical heritage Is superior to others by recognizing the pedagogical and musical value in studying diverse genres of percussion. Incoming graduate and undergraduate students should expect to be regularly involved in a Brazilian Samba ensemble, as well as perform in the Steel Pan ensemble. The ensemble is directed by Andrew Bliss, is incorporated into the UT Percussion Ensemble curriculum, and is open to all interested members on campus. The UT World Percussion Ensemble has worked with guest artists Kendall Williams, Mike Mixtacki, Josh Quillen, Fernando Rocha, and others.
The UT World Percussion Ensemble frequently performs on campus, with notable off-campus performances at the UT School of Music Gala and at various local elementary schools. All levels of experience are welcome!
