Aamir Walton

Senior Director of Advancement

With more than a decade of fundraising experience in higher education and the nonprofit sector—and a track record of securing millions of dollars in philanthropic support—Aamir Walton joins the Natalie L. Haslam College of Music as our Senior Director of Advancement.

Walton most recently served as Director of Development at the University of Iowa Center for Advancement, where he was charged with launching a new regional portfolio during the COVID-19 pandemic. Starting with zero prospects, he quickly became one of the Center’s top performers—ranking among the top eight in face-to-face contacts and top three in dollars closed. Since 2020, he has secured more than $6 million in gifts, increasing both major gift asks and closed gifts in the region by 50% annually.

Prior to his role at Iowa, Walton served as an Advancement Officer at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, supporting the Colleges of Pharmacy and Health Sciences and Education. There, he increased regional solicitations by 150% over three years and helped secure multiple principal gifts of $1 million or more.

Walton’s appointment comes at a pivotal time for the college, which was renamed in 2024 in honor of one of the university’s most generous benefactors, Natalie L. Haslam. His hiring marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter as the college continues to strengthen its identity, raise its visibility, and expand its network of support.

Throughout his career, Walton has described himself as a generalist—building relationships across entire regions rather than within a single academic unit. Drawn to the college’s clear mission and purpose, he now seeks to make a focused and lasting impact in this next chapter of his professional journey.

Austin Orr

Multimedia Manager

Austin Orr has pursued his passion of photography, videography and digital media over the past six years, beginning as a videographer for the University of Tennessee’s student newspaper, The Daily Beacon. At The Daily Beacon, Orr served in a leadership role, and managed a team of student videographers.

In 2020, Orr became the creative director for a broadcasting company, Bowman Broadcasting LLC, in middle Tennessee. In this role, Orr produced advertising campaigns for the web and radio. In the following year, he transitioned into a production assistant role with the Office of Information Technology at the University of Tennessee. With the Office of Information Technology, Orr produced educational content for use in online learning at UT.

In 2022, Orr earned his bachelor’s degree in Communication at the College of Communication and Information at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. During his undergraduate career, he served on the Provost’s Student Advisory Council, was chapter president of the Communication Association Honors Society, and was a recipient of the Hagan Scholarship.

Following his graduation, Orr began work as the technology coordinator for the Office of Student Media at UT. As technology coordinator, Orr supported many different student organizations, and helped students to develop their digital media skillset. He led Student Media’s commercial production efforts and launched a grant-funded, partnership with the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. The partnership continues to provide opportunities for student videographers to gain invaluable experience with industry professionals while creating content for the National Park Service.

Orr also was instrumental in the production of Student Media’s Red Dead History campaign. The campaign partnered with UT History department faculty Tore Olsson to create commercials and a documentary supporting Olsson’s 2024 novel, Red Dead’s History. The team worked with actors from the hit game, Red Dead Redemption, and publishers from Macmillan Publishing to create content that received millions of views on IGN’s various channels.

In 2024, Orr earned a master’s degree in digital and strategic communication from the College of Communication and Information at UT. He is set to teach a video production class for the School of Journalism and Media in the spring of 2025.

Orr now brings his experience and passion for storytelling to the Natalie L. Haslam College of Music. He is excited to continue serving students and the UT community in creative and rewarding ways.

When not at work, Orr can be found enjoying many of Knoxville’s running trails or visiting the great Smoky Mountain National Park. He is also an avid movie-goer with his wife, Lauren. The couple enjoys spending time with family and friends across Tennessee. They also volunteer their time and talent as videographers for their church in Maryville, TN.

Clara Belle Pappas

Special Assistant to the Dean

Woof woof, music lovers! I’m Clara Belle Pappas, the newest (and furriest) addition to the College of Music family. My name? Inspired by the legendary pianist and composer Clara Schumann herself – after all, great music and pawsitivity go hand in paw!

I’m not your average pup. While I’m still mastering my scales and wagging my tail to the beat, I’m also in training to become a certified HABIT dog. What does that mean? Well, it means I’ll be spreading joy and harmony throughout the COM halls. I will also be working side-by-side with my mommy, Joni Pappas, at the East Tennessee Children’s Hospital, using music therapy to help heal hearts and paws alike.

When I’m not perfecting my sit-stay or honing my ear-tickling techniques (those belly rubs aren’t going to dispense themselves!), you can find me catching some Z’s in my daddy’s, Dean Deff Paapaas (my name for him), office or sniffing out the best tunes to lend a paw to students in need of a little furry support. Whether you’re a student, faculty, staff, or just someone who needs a friendly face and a wagging tail, I’m here to lend an ear – and maybe even a wet nose!

Next time you’re wandering the halls of the College of Music, keep an eye (or even an ear) out for me. I can’t wait to meet you!
