Phylis Secrist is originally from Georgia. She received the Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Tennessee and the Master of Music degree from Yale University. Prior to her appointment at the University of Tennessee, she taught at East Tennessee State University, Carson Newman University and Radford University in Virginia.

Ms. Secrist served as Principal Oboe with the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra for nearly 40 years as well as Principal Oboe with the Knoxville Symphony Chamber Orchestra and the Knoxville Opera Company during that time. She performed two seasons with the Missouri Symphony Orchestra as Second Oboe and English Horn.

She has performed as frequent soloist with the Knoxville Symphony and with the Johnson City Symphony, the Kingsport Symphony and the Radford Orchestra. Her main teachers are Robert Bloom and John Mack.
