Guest artist recital; "Diversity in works by female composers" A unique program that promotes inclusivity in music and education that, by tradition, is European and male dominated. (Female composers still account for a small portion of music that is being performed today. In fact, they represent only 1.8% of the music that is being performed by major American orchestras.) The composers and their works were chosen to represent a spectrum of cultural and musical styles, ranging from Florence Price, the first successful African-American female composer to living female composers such as Pulitzer Prize winning Ellen Taffe Zwilich. Emerging young composers such as Reena Esmail, an Indian-American composer who works in both Western and Hindustani musical idioms, and South Korean composer Jung Sun Kang (who was commissioned to write a piece specifically for this project) will also be featured. Please join us for a program to hear music that is not often performed! Most of these works have been previously unavailable but will be released on an album by the premiere classical music label Delos Records in late 2018.
