Concerts and Events
The School of Music at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville offers more than 200 performances and events each year. Unless otherwise noted, all concerts are FREE and open to the public. Most concerts and events will be in one of three performance halls on campus: Sandra G. Powell Recital Hall in the Natalie L. Haslam Music Center located at 1741 Volunteer Boulevard; James R. Cox Auditorium and Performance Hall 32, both in the Alumni Memorial Building located at 1408 Middle Drive.

Q&A with Curt Jenkins
Guest Lecture; Curt Jenkins is the tour manager for Miranda Lambert and has recently worked with Lady Antebellum among others. Come learn about Jenkins' experience in the music industry! This session will be moderated by Opie Joe from Q100 Country and is hosted by CMA EDU, the Country Music Association's educational outreach program partnering with UT. This event is free and open to the public.

Faculty recital; Songs from Scandinavia. Following her recent study in Norway, Johnson will perform a concert of music composed for Frøydis Ree Wekre, one of the world’s leading horn players and teachers. Frøydis is responsible for commissioning and inspiring the composition of a vast number of works for the French horn.

Wei-Wei Le; violin and Chih-Long Hu; piano
Guest artist and faculty recital; Described by the legendary violinist Yehudi Menuhin as “one of the most talented young musicians I have ever seen,” Wei-Wei Le has firmly established herself as one of the most gifted violinists of her generation. She has won many prestigious international competitions, including the Yehudi Menuhin International Violin Competition and the Starling International Violin Competition. This program will feature violin sonatas by Poulenc and Prokofiev.

Nois Saxophone Quartet
Guest artist recital; Nois will perform an evening of exciting new and experimental music for saxophone quartet featuring works commissioned by the ensemble. Throughout 2017, Nois collaborated with Chicago-based composers Mathew Arrellin, Niki Harlafti, and Craig Davis Pinson, along with former Chicagoan, Phil Taylor, to bring to life four unique works for the medium. Also featured on the program will be David Reminick's Consort for four detuned soprano saxophones, as well as Thirteen Changes by the late Pauline Oliveros, a text-score realized through improvisation.

Distinguished Lecture Series: Alash
Guest artist lecture; Renowned Tuvan musical ensemble, Alash, provides live demonstration of the regionally unique and engaging style of throat singing known as khoomei. The ensemble will discuss cultural and political contexts of Tuvan music in relation to traditional Tuvan culture, including the agrarian and nomadic lifestyle, patriarchal social structures, and the country’s movement toward independence from the Soviet Union.
