
Auditions & Interviews
All applicants to the Natalie L. Haslam College of Music must complete an audition and/or interview as part of their application. Requirements vary by program and instrument, so please review the guidelines carefully based on your academic level and area of interest.
Undergraduate
Bachelor of Music (BM), Bachelor of Arts (BA), and Applied Music Minor
Audition and interview requirements are organized by academic area or instrument in alphabetical order below, with detailed criteria by degree concentration listed within each tab.
By Academic Area
The following academic areas only require an interview. However, if you wish to study in a private studio (applied lessons), you must also complete an audition for placement. Please refer to your instrument or vocal area in the “By Instruments” section below for your audition requirements.
Business, Advertising/Public Relations, Journalism
For the Music, BA concentrations in Music Business Administration, Music Advertising & PR, and Music Journalism & Media, only an interview is required. Interviews may be conducted in person or virtually, and are offered by invitation only after you submit your application to the Natalie L. Haslam College of Music.
Note: If you wish to take private studio lessons (applied performance), you must also complete an audition for studio placement. Please refer to your instrument or voice area for specific audition requirements.
Music & Culture
For the Music, BA concentration in Music & Culture, only an interview is required. Interviews may be conducted in person or virtually, and are offered to all applicants.

Music Education
For the Music, BM concentration in Music Education, you will submit an interview video with your portfolio as part of the music application.
Additionally, an audition is required for your primary instrument or vocal area. Please refer to your instrument or voice area below for specific audition requirements.
Theory & Composition
For the Music, BM concentration in Music Theory & Composition, only an interview is required. Interviews may be conducted in person or virtually, and are offered by invitation only after you submit your application to the Natalie L. Haslam College of Music.

By Instrument
If you are pursuing a Music, BM degree in Performance, Music Education, or Studio Music & Jazz, a BA degree in Applied Music, or wish to enroll in applied lessons, you will be required to audition in your instrument or vocal studio.
Bassoon
Auditions are held in person and are offered to all applicants.
- All Major Scales
- Two contrasting selections – suggested repertoire include:
- Concertos of: Mozart, Weber, or Vivaldi
- Sonatas of: Telemann, Besozzi, Fasch, Marcello, Devienne, Hindemith, or Saint-Saëns
- Etudes of: Weissenborn or Milde
- Showpieces of: Tansman, Bordeaux, Senaille, Bozza, Weber, Pierne
Cello
Auditions are held in person and are offered to all applicants.
- Two contrasting movements from the Solo Bach Suites. From memory, if possible.
- First movement of a Standard Cello Concerto. From memory, if possible.
- One etude by Popper or Piatti, or Duport.
Clarinet
Auditions are held in person and are offered to all applicants.
- Major Scales – full range (slurred or articulated, ascending and descending).
- Chromatic Scale – full range (ascending and descending).
- One Slow Etude – Rose 32 or 40 Studies.
- One Fast Etude – Rose 32 or 40 Studies.
- One solo piece from the Standard Repertoire (Possible choices include Weber, Finzi, Mozart, Rabaud, Messager, Stamitz, Tartini, Poulenc, Crusell, Stravinsky and Brahms).
Students are asked about their musical experiences and career aspirations. Instructor will meet with the student and guardians following the audition. It is recommended to contact Professor Victor Chavez prior to the audition to set-up a free lesson.
Euphonium
Auditions are held in person and are offered to all applicants.
- Two contrasting solo movements, either from the same work or from separate works.
- One etude, any style. Preferably not a Tennessee all-east, all-middle, all-west, or all-state audition etude.
- All major scales.
- Sight reading.
Flute
Auditions are held in person and are offered to all applicants.
- All Major scales and chromatic scales, performed from memory. Preferably in extended format following Marcel Moyse’s Daily Exercise book.
- Contrasting selections, choose one from each of the following groups:
- Group 1: First movement of a Mozart Concerto (Concerto No. 1 in G major, KV 313 or Concerto No.2 in D Major, KV 314). Complete, without Cadenzas.
- Group 2: One piece from the French Conservatoire Pieces. A good reference is the Louis Moyse “Blue Book” Flute Music by French Composers. No accompaniment necessary.
- Group 3: A movement from a French, Italian, German or English Baroque Sonata.
- An etude/study from any of the books below:
- Henri Altés- 26 selected studies
- Carl Andersen- 24 Studies Op. 33 or 18 Studies Op.41
- Benoit Berbiguier 18 etudes in all tonalities
- Giuseppe Gariboldi- 20 Etudes for the Flute, Op.132
- Ernesto Koehler- 24 Etudes Op. 33 (Book 1) or 12 Etudes Op.33 (Book 2)
- Sight reading
Guitar (Jazz)
A live audition is expected prior to admission in the Studio Music & Jazz program. Auditions are held in person and are offered to all applicants. Students will be asked to perform the following:
- Two-three prepared tunes from memory.
- Selections should be drawn from standard jazz repertoire, including the Great American Songbook, bebop compositions, hard bop compositions, etc.
- At least one of these tunes should be performed with the Studio Music & Jazz faculty. Students may elect to perform a second tune with the faculty or to perform a chord-melody arrangement as their second audition selection.
- For each selection, students should perform the melody, improvise two or three choruses of solo, and comp for a horn player or bassist for two choruses.
- Students should bring three sheet music copies of each of their selections to their audition.
- Major scales, two octaves
- Sight-read a piece of music that includes both chord symbols and notated melodies.
- Demonstrate ability to play the following basic chord types: dominant 7th, major 7th, minor 7th, half-diminished seventh, fully diminished seventh
Horn
Auditions are held in person and are offered by invitation only after you submit your application to the Natalie L. Haslam College of Music.
- One solo work from the standard horn repertoire. If multi-movement, please choose one movement to play.Example:
- Concerto in E-flat major, KV. 447, W. A. Mozart
- Morceau de Concert, Op. 94, Camille Saint-Saëns
- Nocturno, Op. 7, Franz Strauss
- Laudatio, Bernhard Krol
- Two contrasting etudes demonstrating contrasting styles. Example: etudes by Gallay, Maxime-Alphonse, Kopprasch and Bordogni
- Please be prepared for sightreading and all major and minor scales.
Oboe
Auditions may be conducted in person or virtually and are offered to all applicants.
- Chromatic scale
- Two contrasting selections from the following repertoire
- One movement from a concerto by Mozart, Haydn, Cimarosa, or Marcello
- One movement from a Sonata by Handel or Telemann
- One solo piece from standard oboe literature
- One selection from the Barret Oboe Method
Organ
Auditions are held in person and are offered to all applicants.
- One of the Eight Little Preludes and Fugues attributed to J.S. Bach or another baroque work of a similar or more advanced level of difficulty.
- Two other contrasting pieces including a piece from the 20th century.
- A hymn, with an introduction and 2 stanzas, as if accompanying a congregation
- Sight-read an unfamiliar hymn or chorale from a standard hymnal (sight-reading may be done at the piano).
Percussion (Classical)
Auditions are held in person and are offered to all applicants.
The undergraduate admission audition for UT Percussion Studies requires a solo performance audition as well as a short interview with the percussion area faculty.
Students should perform solo repertoire in at least three percussive areas (outlined below) and will sight-read on both 2-mallet keyboard and concert snare drum.
While each individual will likely have areas of personal strength, the faculty would like to emphasize how important it is that students demonstrate abilities on a diversity of repertoire and instruments.
All equipment that auditioning students may need will be provided in the practice and audition rooms. Students who prefer to bring personal instruments are welcome to do so. Students should bring any sticks or mallets needed for the audition as well as original copies of the music they are performing.
Required Audition Areas (must do both)
- Keyboard Percussion: Two solos on marimba, vibraphone, or xylophone. One selection should demonstrate 2-mallet proficiency while the other demonstrates 4-mallet ability using whichever grip / technique is most comfortable for the student.
- Snare Drum: A concert snare drum solo/etude is required. An additional solo in a rudimental style is optional.
Choice Audition Areas (choose one or more)
- Timpani: An etude or solo for two, three, or four drums. Excerpts from the standard orchestral repertoire would also be acceptable.
- Multiple Percussion: An etude/solo on any combination of percussion instruments.
- Drum Set: A prepared solo and/or improvisation in a variety of styles.
- World Percussion Instruments: A prepared solo and/or improvisation in an area of your choice.
Percussion (Jazz)
A live audition is expected prior to admission in the Studio Music & Jazz program. Auditions are held in person and are offered to all applicants. Students will be asked to perform the following:
- Two (2) prepared tunes from memory. At least one of these tunes should be performed with play-a-long accompaniment. Students should be prepared to play the melody and improvise for two or three choruses. Pianists and guitarists will be asked to comp for two additional choruses.
- Major scales, two octaves
- Sight-reading. Horn players and drum set students may also be asked to sight-read selections from big band charts.
- Demonstrate time in swing, latin, funk/rock.
Piano (Classical)
Audition requirements for piano depend on the student’s chosen major. Auditions are held in person and are offered to all applicants.
Performance Majors
- A minimum of three works representing different stylistic periods. One work of the three must be the first movement of a classical sonata.
- Memorization strongly suggested.
BM Music Education, BA Applied Music, Applied Lessons Enrollment
- Two works representing different stylistic periods. One work of the three must be the first movement of a classical sonata.
- Memorization strongly suggested
Piano (Jazz)
A live audition is expected prior to admission in the Studio Music & Jazz program. Auditions are held in person and are offered to all applicants. Students will be asked to perform the following:
- Two (2) prepared tunes from memory. At least one of these tunes should be performed with play-a-long accompaniment. Students should be prepared to play the melody and improvise for two or three choruses. Pianists and guitarists will be asked to comp for two additional choruses.
- Major scales, two octaves
- Demonstrate all basic chords: major, minor, diminished and augmented (added 6th, 7th, and 9th)
- Sight-read a simple chord progression
Saxophone (Classical)
Auditions are held in person and are offered to all applicants.
Two contrasting movements from a multi-movement solo work in the saxophone literature, or two contrasting etudes (such as the Ferling etudes). One movement or etude should showcase your ability to play lyrically, while the other demonstrates your technical skills.
- Suggested repertoire:
- Sonatas by Creston, Heiden, Eccles, Fasch; Tableaux de Provence by Maurice
- Concertos by Glazunov, Creston, Ibert
- Chromatic scale
- Major scales – preference for extended scales through the full range of the instrument
- Harmonic/melodic minor scales – if you have studied them (not required)
- Sight-reading
Students may audition on any type of saxophone (soprano, alto, tenor, baritone), but should not bring multiple saxophones to the audition due to time constraints.
Saxophone (Jazz)
A live audition is expected prior to admission in the Studio Music & Jazz program. Auditions are held in person and are offered to all applicants. Students will be asked to perform the following:
- Two (2) prepared tunes from memory. At least one of these tunes should be performed with play-a-long accompaniment. Students should be prepared to play the melody and improvise for two or three choruses. Pianists and guitarists will be asked to comp for two additional choruses.
- Major scales, two octaves
- Sight-reading. Horn players and drum set students may also be asked to sight-read selections from big band charts.
String Bass (Classical)
Audition requirements for the bass depend on the student’s chosen major. Auditions may be conducted in person or virtually and are offered to all applicants.
Performance
- First movement of a standard bass concerto
- One movement of a Baroque sonata or Bach Suite
- One etude from Hrabe, Sturm, Simandl, etc.
BM Music Education, BA Applied Music, Applied Lessons Enrollment
- Two contrasting musical works
String Bass (Jazz)
A live audition is expected prior to admission in the Studio Music & Jazz program. Auditions are held in person and are offered to all applicants. Students will be asked to perform the following:
- Two (2) prepared tunes from memory. At least one of these tunes should be performed with play-along accompaniment. Students should be prepared to play the melody and improvise for two or three choruses.
- Major scales, two octaves
- Sight-reading.
Trombone (Classical)
Auditions are held in person and are offered by invitation only after you submit your application to the Natalie L. Haslam College of Music. Requirements include:
- One movement or less than 8 minutes of a solo from the standard repertoire:

Trombone (Jazz)
A live audition is expected prior to admission in the Studio Music & Jazz program. Auditions are held in person and are offered to all applicants. Students will be asked to perform the following:
- Two (2) prepared tunes from memory. At least one of these tunes should be performed with play-a-long accompaniment. Students should be prepared to play the melody and improvise for two or three choruses.
- Major scales, two octaves
- Sight-reading.
Trumpet (Classical)
Auditions are held in person and are offered to all applicants.
Audition Requirements:
- One movement of a solo from the standard repertoire
- Two contrasting etudes demonstrating technical and lyrical playing
- All Major scales played by memory
- Sight reading
- No All State, All East, Mid State or All West music
Please note that bringing less than the minimum required above may disqualify you from the audition.

Tuba

- Two contrasting solo movements, either from the same work or from separate works.

Viola
Audition requirements for the viola depend on the student’s chosen major. Auditions are held in person and are offered to all applicants.
Performance
- Two contrasting movements from the Solo Bach Suites. From memory, if possible.
- First movement of a standard viola concerto. From memory, if possible.
BM Music Education, BA Applied Music, Applied Lessons Enrollment
- Any two pieces from two different musical period.
Violin
Audition requirements for the violin depend on the student’s chosen major. Auditions may be conducted in person or virtually and are offered to all applicants.
Performance
- Two contrasting movements (or Fugue or Chaconne) of unaccompanied J.S. Bach sonata or partita
- One movement of any concerto
- Any piece or caprice of candidate’s choice
- Memorization is encouraged, but optional
BM Music Education, BA Applied Music, Applied Lessons Enrollment
- Any two pieces from two different musical periods
Voice
Auditions are held in person and are offered by invitation only after you submit your application to the Natalie L. Haslam College of Music.
Audition Requirements:
- Two memorized selections, in contrasting styles from the 17th – 21st centuries, are required for consideration into the vocal program at the School of Music.
- One selection must be from the standard classical sacred or secular vocal repertoire.
- Each selection may be performed in English or a foreign language, according to the student’s vocal training.
- Arias from opera, as well as American Musical Theater styles are also allowed, however, the singing of difficult, dramatic selections is neither encouraged nor desired. Singers should, therefore, choose repertoire that exudes a pleasant vocal quality, expressiveness, good intonation and dynamic contrasts, as well as musical and expressive-communicative qualities.
- Accompanist provided.
Please note, students interested in minoring in Voice will audition at the start of the school year for placement with a graduate student for private voice lessons.

Bassoon

Cello
Auditions are held in person and are offered to all applicants.
Audition Requirements:
- Excerpts from a recital program at least 30 minutes in length, including movements from no fewer than three contrasting compositions.
Clarinet
Auditions are held in person and are offered to all applicants.
Audition Requirements:
- Two contrasting solos from the standard clarinet repertoire – i.e. Mozart, Copland, Brahms, Rigoletto, Debussy, Stravinsky, Martino, etc.
- Two contrasting Etudes from the Rose Studies, Cavallini or Baermann, Jeanjean 16 or 18, Jettel studies, etc.
- Major scales and 3 forms of minor scales
- An interview discussing the student’s goals for graduate school and career goals
- Sight-Reading and rhythm assessment
- Performance Majors should select 5 orchestra excerpts from the standard audition selections.
An informal interview follows the audition. Students are asked about their musical experiences and career aspirations. Instructor will meet with the student following the audition. It is recommended to contact Prof. Victor Chavez prior to the audition to set up a free lesson.
Collaborative Piano
Auditions are held in person and are offered by invitation only after you submit your application to the Natalie L. Haslam College of Music.
While there may be some flexibility allowed in the audition repertoire, the standard selections are as follows:
- A solo piano work (memorization preferred)
- A complete Mozart or Beethoven violin sonata
- Faure: Notre amour
- Mozart: Porgi amor (from Le nozze di Figaro)
- Puccini: Il mio babbino caro (from Gianni Schicchi)
- Rossini: Largo al factotum (from Il barbiere di Siviglia)
- Joseph Marx or Richard Strauss: any Lied
Euphonium
Prior to auditions, applicants should submit the following pre-screening materials as part of their application:

- 4 Contrasting selections, choose one from each of the following groups:

Guitar (Jazz)
Audition Requirements:
A live audition is expected prior to admission in the MM in Jazz Studies program and is offered to all applicants. Students auditioning for the Master of Music in Jazz Studies are expected to have completed an undergraduate music degree comparable to the University of Tennessee Bachelors Degree in Studio Music and Jazz.
The audition will consist of the student performing 2 or 3 compositions of their choice with the jazz faculty. Please prepare several memorized tunes from the jazz repertoire to perform with the jazz faculty.
Horn
Auditions are held in person and are offered by invitation only after you submit your application to the Natalie L. Haslam College of Music.
Audition Requirements
- One complete work from the standard horn repertoire. Can be chosen from but not limited to:
- Jean-Michel Defaye, Alpha
- Frigyes Hidas, Concerto
- Paul Hindemith, Sonata in F or E-flat
- W.A. Mozart, Concerto No. 2, 3, or 4
- Vincent Persichetti, Parable VIII for Solo Horn
- William Grant Still, Songs for horn and piano
- One complete work composed after 1950. Can be chosen from but not limited to:

- Two etudes demonstrating contrasting styles. Can be chosen from but not limited to:

Oboe
Auditions may be conducted in person or virtually and are offered to all applicants.
Audition Requirements:
- Chromatic scale, all major/minor scales
- Two contrasting selections:
- Concertos by Mozart, Haydn, Vaugh Williams, or Strauss.
- Contrasting studies from the Barret Oboe Method or Ferling Studies.
Organ
Auditions are held in person and are offered to all applicants.
Audition Requirements:
- One free work by Johann Sebastian Bach (a prelude and fugue or one or more movements from a trio sonata)
- A Romantic work in a contrasting style
- A work by a 20th/21st century composer
- A hymn, with an introduction and 2 stanzas, as if accompanying a congregation
- Sight read an unfamiliar hymn or chorale from a standard hymnal
Percussion (Classical)
Auditions are held in person and are offered to all applicants. MM candidates should prepare an audition of 20-35 minutes in length. Each candidate is required to perform on a minimum of four (4) instrumental areas as listed below.
Required audition areas include:
Solo Keyboard
- Performance(s) of significant solo repertoire on the marimba and/or vibraphone, which must include at least one 4-mallet selection. Works might include, but are not restricted to those composed by J.S. Bach, Roger Reynolds, Steven Mackey, Paul Lansky, Jacob Druckman, Franco Donatoni, Philippe Manoury, or equivalent.
- Sight Reading on 2-mallet marimba
Snare Drum

Solo Percussion
- Performance(s) of significant solo repertoire. Works might include, but are not restricted to, those composed by Iannis Xenakis, Frederic Rzewski, Vinko Globokar, Georges Aperghis, John Cage, Brian Ferneyhough, Michael Gordon, David Lang, or equivalent.
Choice audition areas include:
- Timpani: A solo or etude to demonstrate musical tone by Delecluse, Hochrainer, Carter, or equivalent. Ability to tune multiple drums from one given pitch.
- World Percussion: A prepared solo or improvisation on frame drums, congas, tabla, or other non-Western instrument.
- Drumset: A prepared solo, play-along, or improvisation in a variety of styles.
- Various Orchestral Excerpts: A variety of orchestral/band excerpts on keyboard (glockenspiel and/or xylophone), snare drum, timpani, and accessory instruments. Minimum 7 excerpts displaying as much variety as possible.
Important Notes:
- An accompanist is neither required nor provided; candidates may bring an accompanist at their own discretion but should notify Dr. Bliss ahead of time.
- Candidates should choose repertoire in each area that best highlights their performance abilities and artistic interests.
- Students choosing to audition in the solo percussion or world percussion areas should communicate ahead of time via email to ensure that the appropriate instruments are available. All students are welcome to bring small personal instruments such as snare drums, tambourines, or specific items needed for solo percussion or world percussion repertoire.
- Repertoire requiring electronics of any kind is welcome, but should also be discussed/cleared with Professor Bliss prior to auditioning.
- Playing on the bowls of the timpani will not be permitted.
Percussion (Jazz)
- Auditions are held in person and are offered to all applicants. Students auditioning for the Master of Music in Jazz Studies are expected to have completed an undergraduate music degree comparable to the University of Tennessee Bachelor’s Degree in Studio Music and Jazz.
- The audition will consist of the student performing 2 or 3 compositions of their choice with the jazz faculty. Please prepare several memorized tunes from the jazz repertoire to perform with the jazz faculty.
Piano (Classical)
Auditions are held in person and are offered by invitation only after you submit your application to the Natalie L. Haslam College of Music. Requirements include:
- A minimum of three works representing different stylistic periods. One work of the three must be the first movement of a classical sonata.
- Memorization strongly suggested.
Piano (Jazz)
- Auditions are held in person and are offered to all applicants. Students auditioning for the Master of Music in Jazz Studies are expected to have completed an undergraduate music degree comparable to the University of Tennessee Bachelor’s Degree in Studio Music and Jazz.
- The audition will consist of the student performing 2 or 3 compositions of their choice with the jazz faculty. Please prepare several memorized tunes from the jazz repertoire to perform with the jazz faculty.
Saxophone (Classical)
Auditions are held in person and are offered by invitation only after you submit your application to the Natalie L. Haslam College of Music. Requirements are as follows:
Two contrasting works from the standard saxophone literature that showcase different styles.
- Suggested pieces include:
- Ibert Concertino da Camera, Desenclos Prélude, Cadence, et Finale, Albright Sonata, Dahl Concerto, Denisov Sonata, Larsson Konsert, op. 14, Swerts Klonos Noda Mai or Improvisation, Scelsi Tre Pezzi, Berio Sequenza, Yoshimatsu Fuzzy Bird Sonata, Lauba Neuf Etudes
- Other works of similar scope and difficulty
- Scales – major and minor scales/thirds extended to the full range of the instrument. Will ask what other scale skills you have studied and are prepared to play.

Saxophone (Jazz)

Please prepare a 15 minute audition of contrasting selections from the solo, method/etude, and standard orchestral repertoire. Be prepared for major and minor scales as well as potential sight-reading.
Trombone (Jazz)

Prior to auditions, applicants should submit the following pre-screening materials as part of their application:
- Musical video recording due December 15, to include one solo and three orchestra and/or military band audition excerpts. At least one of your recordings needs to be on C tuba, and at least one of your recordings needs to be on F or E-flat tuba.

Viola
Auditions are held in person and are offered to all applicants.
- Excerpts from a recital program at least 30 minutes in length, including movements from no fewer than three contrasting compositions.
Violin
Auditions may be conducted in person or virtually and are offered to all applicants.
- Two contrasting movements (or Fugue or Chaconne) of unaccompanied J.S. Bach sonata or partita
- One movement of any concerto
- Any piece or caprice of candidate’s choice
- Memorization is encouraged, but optional
Voice
Auditions are held in person and are offered by invitation only after you submit your application to the Natalie L. Haslam College of Music. Audition requirements incIude:
- Four memorized selections, in contrasting styles from the 17th to 21st centuries, are required for consideration into the graduate vocal program.
- All selections must be from the standard classical sacred or secular vocal repertoire. Two arias in contrasting languages and style are preferred, as well as two art songs and/or oratorio selections.
- Selections must be in a minimum of three of the following languages: English, Italian, French, German and Latin.
- Accompanist provided.
