How to Apply

Whether you’re applying as a first-year undergraduate student, graduate student, or transferring in, we’re thrilled you’re considering the Natalie L. Haslam College of Music. Because of the unique nature of our music programs, there are a few extra steps beyond applying to the University of Tennessee.

Undergraduate Applicants

To be considered for admission to the Natalie L. Haslam College of Music as a first-year college student, you must submit an application to the University of Tennessee and to the Natalie L. Haslam College of Music. You can review key dates and deadlines below.

Step 1: Start your UT application

You can apply to the University of Tennessee via the Common Application or through the UT Portal. Visit the Office of Admissions website to begin this process.

We strongly encourage you to apply to UT by the Early Action deadline of November 1. Because UT’s general admission is competitive, applying early gives you a better chance of being admitted — and it helps us expedite your music admission decision as well.

Once you begin your UT application and choose a music program for your intended degree of study, you will receive a link invitation in the UT Portal to begin your Natalie L. Haslam College of Music application.


Step 2: Complete your Natalie L. Haslam College of Music application

Submit your music-specific materials through our UT Music application by December 15.

Some programs in the Natalie L. Haslam College of Music have additional portfolio requirements in addition to the standard college application. Program expectations can be found on our Portfolio Requirements page.


Step 3: Auditions & Interviews

All major concentrations within the Natalie L. Haslam College of Music require an audition and/or interview. Audition repertoire and interview information can be found on our Auditions & Interviews page.


Step 4: Acceptance & Scholarship Decisions

Admission to the Natalie L. Haslam College of Music and scholarship decisions are contingent on both your UT admissions decision and your audition/interview results. You will receive separate communications from UT Undergraduate Admissions and the Natalie L. Haslam College of Music on acceptance decisions.

Important: You must be admitted to the University of Tennessee and audition and/or interview with our college before we can offer you admission to the Natalie L. Haslam College of Music as a music major.

That’s why we strongly recommend applying to UT by the Early Action deadline (November 1).
Early application allows us to review and process your Natalie L. Haslam College of Music decision more efficiently.

Graduate Applicants

To be considered for admission to the Natalie L. Haslam College of Music as a graduate student, you must submit an application to the University of Tennessee Graduate School and the Natalie L. Haslam College of Music. You can review key dates and deadlines below.

Step 1: Begin your UT Graduate School application

Visit the UT Graduate School website to begin your application. Once you begin your UT application and choose a music program for your intended degree of study, you will receive a link invitation in the UT Portal to begin your Natalie L. Haslam College of Music application.

UT Graduate School Application Requirements

  • $60 application fee
  • One official transcript from all colleges and universities attended. Transcripts must be official transcripts sent from school to school.
  • If your native language is not English, send official scores from Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL – iBT)), IELTS (International English Language Testing System), or Duolingo English Test.
  • International students must follow the Admission Guide for International Students.
  • Please do not submit letters of recommendation to the Graduate School. Letters of recommendation will be collected through the College of Music’s application.

Step 2: Apply to the Natalie L. Haslam College of Music

Submit your music-specific materials through our UT Music application by December 15.

You will receive separate communications from the UT Graduate School and the Natalie L. Haslam College of Music on acceptance decisions. Scholarship and GTA information will be communicated by the Natalie L. Haslam College of Music.

Key Dates

Natalie L. Haslam College of Music Application Priority Deadline: December 15

(If your program requires a pre-screening, or if you would like to be considered for an assistantship, please submit your application by the priority deadline of December 15, 2025).

UT Graduate School Deadline (international applicants): February 1

UT Graduate School Deadline (domestic applicants): Domestic applicants may apply up to two weeks prior to the beginning of the desired term of entry.

Transfer Applicants

Step 1: Start your UT application

You can apply to the University of Tennessee as a transfer student via the Common Application or through the UT Portal. Visit the Office of Admissions website to begin this process.

As part of the transfer application process, UT is required to have a transcript on file from each college you’ve attended, even if it was a summer school or dual-enrollment course at a community college. You can learn more about specific requirements by visiting the Office of Admissions website.

Once you begin your UT application and choose a music program for your intended degree of study, you will receive a link invitation in the UT Portal to begin your Natalie L. Haslam College of Music application.


Step 2: Complete your Natalie L. Haslam College of Music application

Submit your music-specific materials through our UT Music application by December 15.

Admission to the Natalie L. Haslam College of Music and scholarship decisions are contingent on both your UT admissions decision and your audition/interview results.

Important: You must be admitted to the University of Tennessee before we can offer you admission to the Natalie L. Haslam College of Music as a music major. So while the UT transfer application deadline is July 1 prior to a fall semester, we encourage you to apply to UT as soon as possible to expedite your UT Music admissions decision.
