Does your area of study have special audition requirements?
If you are only minoring in Music Theory, Music Composition, or Music Business, without a music major, you do not need to audition on an instrument. You will only need to interview with faculty in your area. However, if you wish to take applied lessons anytime during your study, you will need to audition for the appropriate applied faculty and be accepted to their studio before you can register for lessons.
Applied Music and Music and Culture minors need to audition on an instrument.
If you would like to study music education, you must complete a performance audition and an interview with a member of the music education faculty. This interview will determine whether you’re accepted into music education classes.
Note: After completing two years of coursework, you will need to apply for admission to Teacher Education. Further details can be found under Music Education.
If you wish to major in Theory/Composition, you must interview with members of the Theory/Composition area on audition day.
If you would like to major in Music & Culture, you will need to interview with members of the Musicology area on audition day.
3. Reference Letters
Submit two reference letters online through the Vol In Progress admissions portal. At least one letter should be from a music teacher (e.g., a high school music teacher or a private instructor).
4. Audition and Scholarship Results
Audition results will be sent by US mail by March 15.
Scholarships offers will be mailed by April 1.
5. Take a Theory Placement Exam
Before entering the School of Music, you will take a music theory placement exam. This exam will be taken either before or at summer orientation, prior to registering for classes. This is an online exam covering only written theory concepts.
