drumsWho will listen to my audition for the UT School of Music?
Undergraduate and graduate percussion auditions are heard by Dr. Bliss (Assistant Professor of Percussion) and graduate teaching assistants from the UT Percussion Studies Area. Professor Keith Brown (Studio Music and Jazz) typically attends all auditions as well if schedules permit.

All auditions will typically also include one of the 3 directors from the UT Band Program.

How many students are accepted each year for the UT Percussion Studio?
While studio numbers fluctuate, the UT Percussion Studio typically consists of 18 undergraduates and 6 MM students. This means in a given year approximately 4 new undergraduates are taken and 3 MM students. Admittance is dependant upon the number of students currently enrolled in the program and may change slightly each year.

Are percussion lessons and percussion ensemble available to non-majors at UT?

Applied lessons for non-majors is dependent upon the current size of the UT Studio. If you are interested, please contact Dr. Bliss (abliss@utk.edu) via email.

All UT Percussion Ensembles are open to any UT students regardless of major. Admittance is obtained each semester via an audition, which  are held at the beginning of each semester. Contact Dr. Bliss for more information (abliss@utk.edu).

What type of marimba will I be performing on for my audition?

Auditions will take place in the UT Percussion Ensemble room, where there will be a heigh-adjustable marimba (Dynasty, Marimba One, or Adams), a Black Swamp concert snare drum, and four Ludwig balanced action (no clutch) timpani.
