Concerts and Events

The School of Music at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville offers more than 200 performances and events each year. Unless otherwise noted, all concerts are FREE and open to the public. Most concerts and events will be in one of three performance halls on campus: Sandra G. Powell Recital Hall in the Natalie L. Haslam Music Center located at 1741 Volunteer Boulevard; James R. Cox Auditorium and Performance Hall 32, both in the Alumni Memorial Building located at 1408 Middle Drive.

    Guest artist recital; Pablo Mahave-Veglia, professor of cello at Grand Valley State University, and pianist Gregory Crowell present a concert of Baroque sonatas featuring Vivaldi. Professor Mahave-Veglia will perform on a five string baroque cello for this special event

  • Shawna Pennock; saxophone
    Guest artist recital; This recital program is filled with pieces to help engage young saxophonists in the world of extended techniques. Works by up-and-coming composers Joel Love, Sam Lipman, Al Theisen, and Corey Dundee explore multiphonics, vocalizing, slap tongue, and microtonality on soprano, alto, tenor, and baritone saxophones. Get ready to get weird with saxophonist Shawna Pennock, and pianist Greg Hankins.

  • Hans Boepple; piano
    Guest artist recital; Winner of the International Bach competition, Boepple has been a featured soloist with distinguished orchestras since his debut with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra at age 10. His concerto performances also include the Denver Symphony, Minnesota Orchestra, Santa Rosa Symphony, Long Beach Symphony, Metropolitan Opera House Orchestra, Napa Symphony, and Santa Cruz Symphony. As a guest artist on concert series across the United States, both National Public Radio and Voice of America Have broadcast his live performances. His program will include Chopin’s Sonata No. 3 in B Minor, and works by Bach, Franck, and Rachmaninoff.

  • Colin Carr; cello
    Guest artist recital; Colin Carr appears throughout the world as a soloist, chamber musician, recording artist, and teacher. He has played with major orchestras worldwide, including the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, The Philharmonia, Royal Philharmonic, BBC Symphony, the orchestras of Chicago, Los Angeles, Washington, Philadelphia, Montréal and all the major orchestras of Australia and New Zealand. Conductors with whom he has worked include Rattle, Gergiev, Dutoit, Elder, Skrowasczewski and Marriner. He has been a regular guest at the BBC Proms and has twice toured Australia. Carr will perform Bach suites.
